Two tired footsteps tramp through the house
the child runs and hides as quiet as a mouse
the lock snaps shut as she closes the door
But she knows it's not the end...there's more.

he yells at the child and tries to get in
he plans on committing a terrible sin
she found a screw driver in his top bureau drawer
she doesn't want her mother to hurt anymore

with a crack of the jam, the door flies open
she tries to avoid what she knows will happen
he raises his fist and swings for the child
the look in his eyes is of something wild

she falls to the floor and cries out in pain
her mother promises it won't happen again
but tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes
and this time she has a broken nose

she packs up some clothes and a subway map
and goes as far as she can on that
she found what she wanted so far away
and is finally happy this very day.
